Can I install a whole house surge protector myself safely?
DIY installation is not recommended. Whole‑home surge protectors connect inside your main electrical panel, and incorrect wiring can create shock or fire risk. A licensed electrician can usually install a surge protector in a couple of hours, depending on your panel. Power strips only protect the devices plugged directly into them; a whole house surge protector helps protect every outlet, appliance, and electronic device, including against lightning‑related surges. Most whole house surge protectors last 5 to 10 years.
