Why Is My AC Running But Not Blowing Cold Air?

An AC that runs but isn’t blowing cold air usually has an airflow blockage, low refrigerant, a control setting issue, or a problem at the outdoor unit. The most common cause is restricted airflow from a dirty filter or coil, which lets the fan move air without removing heat. If airflow and settings are fine, a refrigerant leak or a failed compressor/condensing fan is likely and needs professional repair. We see this often in Castle Rock homes during cottonwood season when filters plug fast. A quick field clue: if the outdoor fan spins but the air out the top feels only mildly warm, the compressor may not be engaging. We offer same-day service and 24/7 emergency help.

Try these quick checks before calling:

• Set thermostat to Cool and fan Auto, lower setpoint 5°F, and confirm it isn’t on Hold.
• Replace/clean the return filter.
• Clear debris around the outdoor unit and listen for the compressor.
• If you see frost on the lines, turn the system off to thaw.

If basic checks don’t restore cooling, schedule a diagnostic so a licensed tech can test refrigerant charge and electrical components safely.
